How to setup an OpenRoaming WiFi Network with Purple

  • Updated

What is OpenRoaming?

OpenRoaming is a global roaming federation that allows users to connect to public Wi-Fi networks automatically and securely, similar to how a mobile phone connects to different mobile/cellular masts.

It's overseen by the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) and leverages the Passpoint (Hotspot 2.0) standard. This technology eliminates the need for manual logins, searching for SSIDs, or navigating captive portals, creating a seamless connectivity experience across participating networks globally, using credentials from an Identity Provider (IDP) like Purple.

What are the benefits of creating a WiFi network that supports OpenRoaming?

By configuring your Wi-Fi to support OpenRoaming you offer significant benefits to your end-users:

  • Seamless and Automatic Connectivity - devices that are provisioned for OpenRoaming  will automatically and instantly connect to your network when they enter your venue, without any manual action. This greatly improves the user experience.
  • Enhanced Security - OpenRoaming mandates the use of enterprise-grade security protocols (Passpoint/802.1X and wireless encryption), which is far more secure than traditional open or captive portal Wi-Fi. This protects the user's data from common public Wi-Fi risks.
  • No Login Friction - The elimination of captive portals and repeated login screens removes frustration, encouraging users to stay connected for longer and potentially increasing engagement with your venue's services.
  • Global Access - The credentials a user obtains once from the Identity Provider (Purple) grant them access to any OpenRoaming-enabled network worldwide, turning your venue into one of many trusted, easily accessible hotspots.

How can I get started with OpenRoaming and Purple?

In two simple steps!

  1. Sign up for a free Connect account with Purple that enables a simple, secure WiFi network that allows for users to seamlessly connect.
  2. Configure your WiFi hardware to create a new SSID that is secure and OpenRoaming compatible. We support most hardware - see our supported hardware list.

How do end users connect to this secure WiFi network?

End users download the Purple Connex app and install the Purple WiFi Pass as a one time process. They will then be able to seamlessly connect to your OpenRoaming network and millions of other OpenRoaming networks around the world, seamlessly and securely.
